Armed Protection Officer (APO) Development Program

Attendance is limited to currently licensed armed security guards only. Marketing as a 15 hour course to avoid confusion with the 16 Hour OJT.

The Armed Protection Officer (APO) Development Program is an intensive two-day, 15-hour advanced training course designed for armed security professionals who want to go beyond basic certification and build real-world operational capability.

This program focuses on developing practical, performance-based skills that enhance officer safety, confidence, and decision-making in high-stress environments.

**Day 1 – Foundations & Firearms Proficiency**

Day 1 establishes a strong foundation in NYS Article 35 – Use of Force, combined with critical firearms safety and handling skills.

Students will develop proficiency in:

  • Safe firearm handling and maintenance
  • Drawing and re-holstering fundamentals
  • Target anatomy and effective shot placement
  • Two-handed and one-handed shooting techniques
  • Tactical reloads and weapon manipulation
  • Movement, positioning, and use of cover
  • Engagement principles including failure-to-stop and flash sight picture shooting

Training emphasizes hands-on application and repetition, ensuring students build confidence and consistency in fundamental skills.

**Day 2 – Applied Tactics & Scenario Training**

Day 2 transitions into real-world application and tactical performance.

Students will train in:

  • Situational awareness and threat recognition
  • Anticipating and responding to evolving threats
  • Control techniques and proper handcuffing procedures
  • Low-light operations and flashlight integration
  • One-handed (injured/disabled) firearm manipulation
  • Close-quarters building clearing fundamentals

The course culminates in scenario-based training exercises focused on decision-making, judgment, and appropriate use of force under stress.

**Why This Program Stands Out**

This course introduces students to advanced concepts and training methods that are often not covered in standard armed guard training.

Participants will leave with:

  • Increased confidence in real-world situations
  • Improved tactical decision-making skills
  • Enhanced firearm handling and control under stress
  • A higher level of professional readiness

**Certification**

Upon successful completion, students will receive:

  • Course Completion Certificate
  • Official APO Pin

Graduates will stand out within the security industry for their commitment to advanced training and professional development.

**Required Equipment**

Students must bring the following:

  • Proper, comfortable footwear
  • Crew neck shirt, hoodie, or collared shirt (no open neck or bare chest)
  • Duty firearm
  • Duty holster
  • Duty belt
  • Minimum of 3 magazines
  • 150 rounds of range ammunition
  • Magazine holder (snap closure preferred; open top acceptable)
  • One pair of handcuffs
  • Handcuff holder
  • Eye protection
  • Ear protection
  • Vest or carrier (if available)

Important: No live ammunition is allowed in the classroom

**Important Notice**

  • 8-hour annual armed security in-service training

Attendance is limited to currently licensed armed security guards only.
