Being a protector isn’t just a job — it’s a responsibility.
If your goal is to coast through shifts, do the bare minimum, collect a paycheck, and disappear, this industry will chew you up and spit you out. Security firms talk to each other. Reputations follow you. Eventually, no one will want to hire a guard known for being unreliable or subpar.
Let’s be clear:
Sleeping on duty, showing up out of uniform, excessive call-outs, chronic lateness, or being under the influence are all grounds for immediate removal. This field demands discipline, presence, and pride — anything less is unacceptable.
Fun Fact: Did you know that your employer can ask NYS to suspend your security guard registration so you may never be allowed to work in security again? It is true!
If you want to play around, stop here. If you are willing to learn, please continue.
Yes. An unarmed security guard license is only good for 2 years. Unarmed guards must complete two (2) annual 8hr in-service classes within their registration period before they expire.
No. Unless you are a peace officer, unarmed security guards are prohibited from carrying or using these items while working the unarmed security role.
It depends on the employer, your experience, and the site you are assigned to. Unarmed guards typically make between $17.00 and $21.00 per hour.
You need to gain experience as an unarmed guard first or employers are less likely to hire you. To become an armed guard, you must have your NYS pistol permit first. You then must take the 47 hour course, then submit to NYS for the upgrade.
If no employment contract exists, since NYS is an "at will" state -- your employer can change your schedule at any time.
Absolutely! A NYS employer is only required to pay you for "time worked." You are not working if you are not on site or have your eyes closed taking a nap while on the clock.
Absolutely! A NYS employer can deduct the value of the property you refused to turn in. Not only that, but they can file a police report for theft. In no case can they hold your final check for not turning in their property.
Absolutely! You can try to claim unemployment, but if your employer has a documented paper trail on you, and attempted to correct whatever you were doing wrong, you are TOAST! If you lie on your benefits form, you WILL have to pay back the NYS UI board plus penalties for lying. If you don't pay them back, they will garnish your wages. If you unreasonably quit, NYS may deny your claim.
You will need to do EVERYTHING all over again.
